A. The FAQ

Introduction

Hey, there, readers. In case you didn't realize it, I'm a huge fan of Cheryl Blossom. You know Cheryl. She's the not-so-nice-but-still-sweet-and-loveable rich girl in the Archie comics series. I love her so much, I've decided to write this FAQ on Cheryl, so that fans can learn a lot about her.

This project started as a site on Wednesday, December 22, 1999, at 9:00 AM. It was called The Betty Cooper and Cheryl Blossom Fan Page. Then, on Monday, January 24, 2000, at 10:00 AM, I decided to change the site into two FAQS, one of which you're reading right now. The site never went up. I keep each section of the FAQ as a separate file, so it's easy for me to add info to it.

The Cheryl Blossom FAQ is available in HTML format at http://members.xoom.com/ihavedoneso/cherlfaq.html and in plain text at http://members.xoom.com/ihavedoneso/cheryl.faq

Yes, there is a Betty Cooper FAQ. It's available in HTML format at http://members.xoom.com/ihavedoneso/bettyfaq.html and in plain text at http://members.xoom.com/ihavedoneso/betty.faq

Sources I Use and Don't Use in the FAQ

I've compiled information from many different sources, primarily the following comic book series, which I collect on a regular basis:

Regular
Betty
Veronica
Betty and Veronica
Betty and Veronica Spectacular
Cheryl Blossom

Other Betty and Veronica titles that I've referenced include:

Regular
Betty and Veronica Summer Fun

I also have some non-girl titles, which I bought only to introduce myself to the Archie universe or because they're old. I don't regularly collect these. I've included information from them in this biography. They include:

Regular
Archie's Weird Mysteries

Digest
Archie Comics Digest Magazine

The titles from the 1980s and 1990s are published by Archie Comic Publications, Inc.

I did not include Cheryl's advice in the "Dear Cheryl" column. 1) That's too much stuff to write down. 2) I don't feel it's very accurate.

Whenever I get information from a specific source, I give that source in case you, the readers, wish to look it up yourselves.

I'm not going to add any more information from the digests. It's too much work, and most of the stories are old, so I don't want to add in information out of sequence or accidentally enter in the same information twice if I find the original issues these stories were printed in.

Even though this biography covers a lot, it barely scratches the surface of who Cheryl Blossom is. There are still lots of comics I have to find and check. As I get more of these comics, I'll add them in.

Key Codes

In order to make the FAQ less crowded (and to cut down on the size), I've developed key codes for the titles, so they won't be typed repeatedly in the sources. Here are the codes for the titles:

Archie Comics Digest Magazine (ACD)
Archie's Weird Mysteries (AWM) (No. for comic, # for show)
Betty (BET)
Betty and Veronica (BV)
Betty and Veronica Spectacular (BVS)
Betty and Veronica Summer Fun (BVSF)
Cheryl Blossom (CB)
Veronica (VER)

Revision History

I release a new version of this FAQ every time a new issue of Cheryl Blossom comes out.

The version number system I use is very simple. Whenever I add one or two issues' worth of new material to the FAQ, I increase the version number by .1. Whenever I add a new section or a large amount of new material, I increase the version number by 1.

B. General Information

Who is Cheryl Blossom?

Cheryl Blossom is a character that appears in comic books published by Archie Comic Publications, Inc.

Where did Cheryl first appear?

The early 1980s would see the arrival of far and away the most controversial character ever seen in the long and storied history of Archie Comics: Cheryl Blossom. Cheryl, a buxom, saucy, devil-may-care redhead with a blatant come hither personality, made her infamous debut in "Betty and Veronica # 320" (August, 1982), where, in a story called "Dare To Be Bare", Cheryl caused quite a stir on the beach when she proudly showed off a shockingly brief bikini that horrified even Veronica, then casually tried to go topless, only to be stopped by a panicked Betty!

Portrayed as an international jetsetter who was just as rich as Veronica (if not more so), nowhere near as coy or demure as Betty, and, later, displaying a talent for deviousness that would put Reggie himself to shame, Cheryl, along with her smarmy twin brother, Jason, looked upon the population of Riverdale as beneath her notice, calling its residents townies, and sought to make life miserable for them, except for Archie, whom Cheryl was absolutely crazy about, much to the outrage of Betty and Veronica, as red hair on boys turned her on.

After only two years of entertaining stories that dealt with Cheryl and Jason causing trouble for the Riverdale High crowd, not to mention Cheryl's dogged pursuit of Archie, the Blossoms suddenly vanished from the Archie series' comics without a trace. While no official explanation was ever given for their disappearance, one theory was that Cheryl got the boot because she was too racy a character for the family-oriented atmosphere of Archie Comics.

Since his inception in 1941, Archie has been portrayed as a bastion of clean, wholesome entertainment for kids. Suddenly, along comes the sultry Cheryl who, in her low-cut tops or tight sweaters, brazenly short skirts, and spike heels, made no secret of constantly lusting after boys. One could imagine this did not go over too well with parents, and since they either bought comics for their kids, or controlled what they bought, they probably made a boatload of complaints to the management of Archie Comics, and, as a result, Cheryl was sent packing.

Cheryl finally returned in Veronica, Vol. 1, No. 39 (December, 1994), the concluding chapter of the "Love Showdown" series. It was a shocker to Archie fans worldwide, as she was perhaps the last person Archie fans ever expected to see again. One prevalent theory regarding Cheryl's return was that a foil was needed to keep Archie from choosing between Betty and Veronica as part of the "Love Showdown" plot, to which end, Cheryl was rescued from oblivion by the editors to serve that purpose.

The information in this section came from "Everything's Archie-The Inside Story of Archie Comics" by Jeff Branch and Paul Castiglia.

What comic books has Cheryl appeared in?

Cheryl gained tremendous popularity with Archie fans upon her return. Throughout 1995, Cheryl made guest appearances in virtually every Archie series comic, picking up where she left off in 1982: chasing after Archie and tormenting Betty and Veronica. That lead to four 48-page specials Cheryl starred in, containing new stories and reprints, followed in late 1995 and most of 1996 by a trio of entertaining three-issue mini-series, which would see Jason's return and the first ever appearance of Cheryl's parents.

With fans clamoring for more, their demands were met in early 1997 with the debut of a regular "Cheryl Blossom" comic. The tone of the comic had been set during the last mini-series, where Cheryl went to great lengths to have a movie she made shown at an international film festival. This would lead to the running theme in Cheryl's new book of her neverending quest to be a celebrity, helped along when she and Jason inherited an inn from a deceased aunt and transformed it into a posh resort called Club Blossom, which Cheryl uses to entertain the rich and famous.

The Cheryl Blossom comic is currently published 8 times a year.

The information in this section came from "Everything's Archie-The Inside Story of Archie Comics" by Jeff Branch and Paul Castiglia.

What other media has Cheryl appeared in?

None that I know of. I'll see what I can find.

What Cheryl merchandise is available?

I'll try to get info on older merchandise.

As for current merchandise:

a Cartoon Girl Power shirt with Betty, Veronica, Cheryl, and Sabrina's faces
a Cheryl Blossom t-shirt

Look for order forms in the various Archie Comics titles.

Betty and Veronica fashion dolls were scheduled to be released in November of 2000. They are being made by a company called Playing Mantis. The dolls are 11 1/2" tall, dressed in the latest fashions, complimented with accessories and a 24-page comic book. The ad says "Watch for additional releases coming soon." This might mean an upcoming Cheryl Blossom doll. I can only tell you to check the advertisements and Editor's Notebook in the comic books and the website. I hope to get more info soon.

Is there any Cheryl fan fiction available?

I'm not sure about Cheryl fanfics, but I have written a story called "BETTY COOPER: THIS IS WHO I AM". It is a more mature story, not for little kids. Cheryl appears in it, but she's not the main character. If you're not a regular reader of Archie comics, you might want to read the rest of this FAQ, so you can understand Cheryl better, before proceeding to the story, which is located at http://members.xoom.com/ihavedoneso/fanfics/betty.html

This story has been translated into French by Pascal Plamondon and placed on his Archie site, "Archie : le site francophone". The site will also have more Archie stories (in French). The site is located at http://www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity/Lot/3546/

There are a few adult stories out there. No, I will not provide the URLs. Search for them yourself at AltaVista (http://www.altavista.com) and c|net Search (http://www.search.com) using Advanced Search.

There's a hilarious short story called "Comic Book Universe Battles: Betty Cooper vs. Veronica Lodge" at http://www.electricferret.com/fights/bettyveronica.htm Cheryl makes an appearance.

Is there any Cheryl fan art available?

Check the Cheryl Blossom title for new fan art almost every month, as well as Archie Comics Online, http://www.archiecomics.com

I'll see if there is any other Cheryl artwork on the 'Net.

Cheryl in Her Own Words

"Cheryl Blossom, the vivacious redhead who is beautiful, rich, and knows how to get what she wants, Archie."

- Archie Comics Online

Here is Cheryl Blossom describing herself in her own words! This information comes from Archie Comics Online as of Saturday, October 23, 1999.

Well, hello, darlings! I'm Cheryl Blossom, the hostess with the mostest, and I've just arrived from the inn that Jason and I run after a hard, hard day's work (trying to choose a new color for the remodeled powder room was so-oooooo exhausting!) to tell you all about the best page on the entire Archie Comics website----The Blossom Bulletin!!

The people who run the website wanted to tell you all about me, and Jason and the rest of our gang, but I nixed that idea! If anyone was going to do that, it could only be me!! And so, with the help of someone handy on a keyboard (What? Did you think that I was going to risk my gorgeous nails typing? Get real!!), here's all you need to know about the wonderful world of me and my friends! But, hey, I'm the only truly important one here!

My family and I live in Pembrooke which is an exclusive community bordering, ugh....Riverdale. I was always bored sick when I had to go into that loserville, but that all changed on the fateful day when I met Archie Andrews.

I've always had a thing for redheaded boys, and when I first laid my gorgeous green eyes on Archie, he drove me wild! But my passion for Archie really ticked off his townie girlfriends, Betty and Veronica, and I loved it! The only thing I love more than being with Archie is getting the goats of those silly girls!

Let me tell you, being the most glamorous creature in all the world is an awesome responsibility. I mean, I seriously think my beauty should be registered as a lethal weapon! Because I'm so incredibly stunning, I turn heads everywhere I go. Jealous people (like Betty and Veronica for instance) call me a shameless flirt, well, it's not my fault boys are hopelessly attracted to me!

Even though I have more money than I know what to do with, what I really want in life is to be famous! There's nothing I want more than to be a movie star, but I'm not picky! I'll settle for any sort of media attention I can get! I was born to be in the spotlight, and my dream is to have my own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame! And when I want something, I usually get it, either by hook or by crook!

That's why I had to swallow my pride and force myself into a truce with my slimy twin brother, Jason when we inherited an inn from our flaky old aunt and transformed it into "Club Blossom" the most fabulous hot spot around! Ever since we opened, we've hosted concerts (Having Medusa there was so cool! Even if she was pregnant and cranky!) and all sorts of celebrities! Ooooooh! There's nothing like rubbing shoulders with stars!

Don't believe all those cruel lies spouted by Betty and Veronica who say I'm a scheming, boy crazy and manipulative vamp! Nothing could be further from the truth, kids! I'm just as normal as the next teenaged girl----provided of course she's too beautiful for words, makes the lap of luxury look like a slum and is a genius to boot! Other than that, I'm pretty darn modest, don't you agree? Of course you do.

Sigh, now I suppose I should talk about Jason, after all, he is my brother, though I'd love nothing more than to change that! Jason, whom I've feuded with since we were kids fancies himself a playboy because he's so disgustingly handsome and lives like a king. But, unlike moi, Jason's not the least bit interested in show business, his sole ambition is to date as many girls as humanly possible! I tell you, the boy has NO focus!

When he's not picking up girls like there's no tomorrow (For some bizarre reason, he has a thing for plain Jane Betty Cooper, don't ask me why!), he's constantly in my lovely hair, trying to keep me from achieving the stardom I so rightfully deserve. The only reason he even bothers to help me run the inn is to use it as his personal dating service. There's definitely no love between Jason and me! Never has been, never will be!

The only two people in the world I love as much as myself are my parents. Clifford Blossom is a self made billionaire who started his own computer software business and pretty much rules the industry. Penelope, my mom is real down to earth. Would you believe she avoids the social scene and actually works??? YUCK!!! I must have a talk with her about that sometime!

The first time I met Louella McGruff, whom dad hired to supervise Club Blossom, I thought she came straight from the pro wrestling circuit! Besides being big and burly like a bear (with a temper to match!), Louella is so no nonsense it's sickening. Louella and I have clashed on just about everything about the inn from day one while that weasley Jason kisses up to her like crazy. Sometimes I get my way with her, but not very often!

Outside of Betty and Veronica, the one true pain in my lovely neck are the Clumpitts, a threesome of filthy, revolting hillbillies who, to put it bluntly, put the "red" in redneck! These losers actually live in a treehouse near the inn with no electricity or running water, constantly barge in on the club and otherwise drive me crazy! What I wouldn't give to move them off my land and onto Veronica Lodge's property!

Well, there you have it, friends. Life is pretty good for me, thanks to the inn, I'm becoming famous, I'm the talk of the town, having been on TV, radio, and onstage with Medusa! And I even get Archie Andrews to spend quality time with me when I can tear him away from you-know-who. Be sure to check out my webpage often to see what will happen next! I guarantee you, if it involves me, it'll be great! Ciao, sweeties!

Okay, now that you've read all that, let me tell you that, from what I've read of her, Cheryl is not quite as vain and egotistical as the site says she is. Sure, she's both, but it's not quite so excessive.

Also, Cheryl and Betty seem to be friends now. They began a friendship in 1999, and it's still alive. It'll be interesting to see where this leads.
