BEGIN ACT 5


FADE IN on THE INSIDE OF TASHA'S QUARTERS.

The doors swish open, and TASHA walks in.

TASHA walks over to the coffee table, sits down on the couch, and turns on
the computer.

TASHA: Computer, access all Starfleet records mentioning Natasha Yar.

COMPUTER: Authorization code required.

TASHA (whispering, confused): What the hell . . . ?

Just then, the door chimes.

TASHA (looking up): Come in!

TASHA then looks back down at the screen, as the doors swish open and DAX
walks in.

DAX (walking towards TASHA, smiling): Hi!

TASHA (looking up): Hi, Dax.

TASHA leans back against the couch and rests her arms on the top of it.

DAX sits down in the chair to TASHA'S left.

TASHA looks at DAX lazily with a smile.

DAX (smiling): So what are you up to?

TASHA holds her hands out in front of her, palms up.

TASHA: Well, I'm TRYING to access my Starfleet records, but it says I need
an authorization code.

TASHA drops her arms back on top of the couch again.

DAX smiles and laughs.

DAX: You need a CAPTAIN to authorize you to look at the files.

TASHA just stares at DAX expressionless.

DAX's smile broadens.

DAX: You haven't been recorded as being ALIVE yet, (shaking her head) LET
ALONE as a STARFLEET OFFICER, so the computer thinks you're a CIVILIAN. And
civilians can't have access to Starfleet personnel files.

TASHA (understanding, smiling): Ahhhh.

DAX continues smiling.

TASHA taps her comm badge.

TASHA: Yar to Captain Sisko.


Show SISKO standing in his office. The camera is ZOOMED IN on SISKO'S FACE.

SISKO: Sisko here.


Show TASHA in her quarters.

TASHA: Sorry to bother you, sir . . .


Show SISKO again.

SISKO: That's quite all right, Lt. What do you need?


Show TASHA.

TASHA: Well, sir, I want to access my Starfleet records, but I need an
authorization code from you.


Show SISKO.

SISKO: Computer, access all Starfleet records mentioning Natasha Yar, voice
authorization Sisko six three alpha six zero dash seven. List in
chronological order.


Show TASHA.

TASHA looks at the computer screen.

TASHA (smiling): Thank you, sir.

SISKO (over the comm): Don't mention it, Lt. Sisko out.


Show TASHA.

TASHA looks at DAX and smiles.

TASHA: Well, let's have a look at this, huh?

DAX gets up, walks over, and sits to TASHA'S left on the couch. They both
look at the screen.

On the screen is a picture of a young TASHA in an old red Starfleet Academy
uniform in the upper right corner. The FEDERATION EMBLEM is at the top
center. The rest of the screen in filled up with blue text, the contents of
which will be mentioned by TASHA.

DAX (looking at TASHA and smiling): That's YOU.

TASHA (laughing): Yeah. Starfleet Academy. 'Newly Enrolled. Cadet Natasha
Yar. Born: September 12, 2337. Birthplace: Turkana IV. Mother: Dirana Yar
(her smile fades) - deceased. Father: Yatzik Smirnov - deceased.  (her smile
comes back) Enrolled: September 15, 2355.'

TASHA stops reading and skips ahead.

TASHA: I'll read all this later. Right now I wanna find what I was looking
for in the first place.

DAX: And that is?

TASHA: Ah, here we go.

On the computer screen, TASHA'S DEATH CERTIFICATE appears.

TASHA (looking at DAX): My death certificate, made by Doctor Beverly Crusher
(looks at the screen) . . . almost ten years ago.

TASHA and DAX both look at the screen as TASHA reads it.

TASHA: 'Death Certificate. Natasha Yar. Rank: Lt. - full grade. Born:
September 12, 2337, Turkana IV. Died: (pause) September 11, 2364, Vagra II.
Current assignment: Chief of Security, Tactical Officer, U.S.S. Enterprise,
NCC-1701-D. Commanding Officer: Jean-Luc Picard. Cause of Death: synaptic
damage to the brain (see Captain's Log, same Stardate). CMO: Commander
Beverly Crusher. Surviving relatives: none known.'

TASHA looks up at DAX.

DAX: You died a day before your birthday.

TASHA nods slowly.

TASHA: I was 26 when I died. (shaking her head) I never made it to 27.

DAX: Well, . . . (smiling, shrugging, and holding her hands out) Happy 27th.

TASHA turns angry at that. She points at her face with her left index
finger.

TASHA (speaking through her teeth): Do I LOOK 27 to you?!!!

DAX is startled and moves away from TASHA quickly, hitting her back on the
side of the couch, but she takes no notice of the pain.

TASHA: No, I look like I'm 36! (pointing at herself) I have lost nearly ten
years of my life!

DAX looks at TASHA with fear and uncertainty. TASHA sees that.

TASHA lowers her head, then raises it again and looks at DAX.

TASHA: I'm sorry. (short pause) I didn't mean to take it out on you.

DAX sits back up straight and leans a bit towards TASHA.

DAX (nodding): It's all right, you just . . . (shaking her head) lost your
temper. (nodding) That's understandable.

TASHA (shaking her head): Still, I had no right to SNAP at you like that!

TASHA lowers her head, takes a deep breath, and sighs. After a few moments,
she looks at the computer and shuts it off quickly with her index finger.

TASHA (getting up): I'll look at all this later.

DAX gets up and watches TASHA leave.

TASHA: I'll be on the holodeck.

TASHA walks out the door, leaving DAX pondering over TASHA'S last statement.


Show a CORRIDOR.

TASHA walks up to the door of a holosuite and presses a button on the panel.

TASHA: Computer, access any reports filed and log entries made by crew
members of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D concerning the death of Lt.
Natasha Yar.

TASHA waits for the logs to be displayed on the panel. She reads them
silently.

TASHA turns and walks away from the panel, walking back and forth in a
relaxed manner.

TASHA: Computer, using descriptions given and video taken of the crew
members during that time, could you accurately recreate the Away mission
where Lt. Yar was killed? (stands still)

COMPUTER: Yes, with a 40 percent margin for error -

TASHA dismisses the rest of the COMPUTER'S statement with a wave of her
right arm.

TASHA (firmly): Fine, do it. (less firm) Have the simulation begin right
before Armus tells the Away Team that they may leave.

COMPUTER: Program complete. You may enter.

TASHA (to herself): THIS oughta be interesting.


The HOLOSUITE DOORS open, and a paused scene from "SKIN OF EVIL" is shown.

TASHA walks in, a little surprised by the accuracy.

The DOORS close and disappear.

TASHA walks over to where the simulation of herself is standing and looks it
over. She then takes a step back.

TASHA: Begin simulation.

The scene from "SKIN OF EVIL" plays while TASHA watches. She looks at ARMUS
when he tells the Away Team that they can leave. When the SIMULATION OF
TASHA steps forward and says "We are not going without our shuttle crew.",
TASHA quickly turns to watch.

While ARMUS says "I warn you!", TASHA speaks to the simulation of herself.

TASHA: Don't do it, dummy . . .

TASHA then watches the simulation, turning and following her double with her
eyes, watching as her double is fired at and thrown back, landing on the
ground.

The simulation keeps on playing. TASHA turns back towards ARMUS and pulls
her phaser, sets it to the "KILL" setting, and points it at the SIMULATION
OF ARMUS.

TASHA (grunts): Damn you!

TASHA immediately starts firing.

FADE OUT ON TASHA FIRING
